COURSE INFORMATION

What do you study?

The University of Western Australia is one of the few universities in Australia to offer a B.Sc. in Neuroscience. This undergraduate degree is offered as part of the degrees administered by the Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences. The variety of disciplines important for neuroscience requires a broad collection of units.

Important Note: The requirements for entry to this degree are identical to those for entry into the BSc at The University of Western Australia.

First year

A minimum of 12pts of biology units comprising either:

Biology (BIOL1130 and BIOL1131), or
Human Biology ( ANHB1101 and ANHB1102), or
either BIOL1130 or ANHB1101 plus Molecular Biology of the Cell ( SCIE1106) *,

12 pts of Psychology (PSYC1101 and PSYC1102 )

at least 6pts of Chemistry** for students with TEE Chemistry, or 12pts of Chemistry (CHEM1105 and CHEM1106) for students without TEE Chemistry

Other units to make a total of 48pts, selected from maths, physics, chemistry, and the various biologies

*Note that while Molecular Biology of the Cell (SCIE1106) is not a pre-requisite for any 2nd or 3rd year neuroscience core units, it is a pre-requisite for certain elective units and a number of alternative majors. Great care should therefore be taken in selecting first year biology units in consultation with the course co-ordinator.

**Note that certain second year units and majors require more than this minimum of 1st year chemistry

Second year

Human Neurobiology (ANHB2217)
Physiology of Cells 245 (PHYL2245)
Psychology: PSYC3317 or PSYC3318 (depending on availability)

and other units in designated subject areas to complement the neuroscience content and to provide a possible second major

Third year

Students take the core neuroscience units:

Comparative Neurobiology (ANIM3320)
Neuropharmacology (NEUR3310)
Advanced Neuroscience (NEUR3325)

and other units in relevant areas to complete their science degree requirements.

Note that to remain in the neuroscience program in year 3, students must attain 65% average in the core 2nd year units. The 3rd year unit NEUR3325 can still be taken as part of standard majors (in Physiology or in Anatomy & Human Biology) in the BSc.
